ERIC'S MILES FOR MUSIC, DAY 2, 10/2/2023:

Day 2 of the 24th Annual Cycle North Carolina’s
annual Mountains to Coast bicycle tour.

Wilkesboro to Winston-Salem, Another beautiful morning for riding as temperatures hovered near 60 degrees at the start of Day 2. We left the Appalachians behind and cycled through the Yadkin River Valley into the Piedmont region. When you’re on the open road on 2-wheels, it’s amazing to think about the age of the Appalachian region (1 billion years old) and its vast territory (2000 miles long) knowing that it was created when two continents collided. This formation is in its splendor in the early morning and late evening as pillows of clouds settle in and later disperse over the region.

Cyclists come from all over the USA to take part in this event in order to experience the beautiful scenery. This year 800 cyclists are participating in the event from 49 states and 5 countries. The North Carolina State Troopers (Motorcycle division) have the challenging task of ensuring cyclists have safe passage throughout the week, and they do a remarkable job. At one of our rest stops (Bethel Baptist Church), a Trooper was taking a breather after riding most of the morning. His melodic interpretation of a hymn on the church organ must have been a welcomed departure from his daily duties (scenes are pictured below).

We concluded today’s ride at a small community (Bethania) just out of Winston-Salem (today’s finish line pictured below).

Many small communities like Pfafftown, Bethabara, Germantown, and Bethania were established by German Moravians in the 1730’s when the frontier was beginning to move west.
